“I shot a few short videos with the SEPARATOR in the sand and weeds with some vegetation going through the pump with no sand, then we connected the low level open strainer and ran that for only 10-20 seconds to protect our pump, there was lots of sand.

“A few years ago, just before I went to the trade show in Mississauga, I saw an advertisement for a portable dry hydrant (the BearsPaw Separator). I thought it looked like an interesting concept, and was hoping to see the product at the show. I did find a display with the separators and I purchased one to try and see how it would work. Reason being in Madawaska Valley’s Fire catchment area the water sources are lakes, creeks and ponds. When a strainer is installed in these bodies of water, it puts pebbles, mud and weeds through the pump and plugs up nozzles.
“Since I put the Separator in, I have had no issues. This thing is amazing. I have dropped it in 6 inches (15 cm) of water and had a continuous water source without any debris in my porta tank or nozzles. I would highly recommend this device to any fire service that has to draft from any water source other than a hydrant. It prevents damage to pumps and prevents nozzle plugging up.“

“For years the Piers Island Volunteer Fire Department has been striving to utilize our most abundant and reliable water source: the ocean that surrounds us.
But we were grievously hampered by the fact that our pumps could not reliably draft from the shore as the pump would pick up pieces of seaweed which would immediately clog our nozzles. Or they would “inhale” sand from the ocean floor or debris suspended in the water which would damage our pumps.
We tried strainers on our hard suction lines, tying buoys to the line to keep the intake from picking up sand even rowing the pumps out to deeper water in small boats. Nothing worked until we tried the SEPARATOR.
This device has given us the ability to pump sea water onto any of the 100+ seaside homes on our island. The unit is simple to install, reliable to use and easy to maintain.
